Women, children and men are killed through interpersonal violence at alarming rates around the world. In one year over 1,100 women were murdered by boyfriends and spouses in the US (FBI 2002 Supplementary Homicide Report). Every year in Bangalore roughly 1200 women die of dowry-related deaths. And in Canada both spousal assault and spousal homicide rates are higher for Aboriginal women than for non-Aboriginal women, with spousal homicide rates of Aboriginal women eight times higher than those of non-Aboriginal women.

One day, as a junior at the University of Oregon, I picked up a flyer with details about the Prisoner of War/Missing in Action (POW/MIA) bracelet created by a young woman, Carol Bates Brown, founder of the POW/MIA Bracelet Campaign for Voices In Vital America (VIVA), a student organization. The MIA bracelets were engraved with the name, rank, service, and loss date of an American prisoner or those missing in the war in Southeast Asia. MIA bracelets were distributed to draw public attention to those who were suffering and to help end the U.S. war in Vietnam. I sent in my money and a bracelet arrived with the name Smith, Bud CAPT - 1-8-68. I wore it everyday until the end of the war to remind me that Bud Smith was a real person, missing in action, forever frozen in time. Lost, but not forgotten. By the end of the war in 1976 nearly five million bracelets were sold and a campaign with untold millions of bumper stickers, buttons, brochures, matchbooks, newspaper ads, etc., drew attention to the missing men. One in Three© created Speak My Name Memorial Charms in much the same way: to draw public attention to those suffering in a war of violence and to honor women and children who have been killed. Our intention in memorializing the names of thousands of women who have been murdered is to respectfully remember them, speak their names, tell their story, and keep their names alive: to honor them. Every person has a story to tell and although we may not know them personally or the details of their death, we know the story of their life ended violently.

Speak My Name Memorial Charms honor women like Crystal Brame who was shot on April 26, 2003 by her estranged husband David Brame, Tacoma, WA Chief of Police, in a parking lot as their children sat in a nearby car. And 26 year old Akayla Cuffee who, two weeks after giving birth, was found dead January 15, 2007, in the apartment she shared with her boyfriend.

Every name is connected to acts of intimate partner violence, gender-based violence, domestic violence, interpersonal violence or violence by men against women and children.

About the Names: Names are being sought from around the globe. One in Three© Speak My Name Charms currently name women and children from US, Canada and South Africa. Whenever possible we will include information about them.
About Languages: One in Three© Speak My Name Charms come in diverse languages; currently available in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Kikuyu.
Custom Orders: Speak My Name Memorial Charms are available by commission; provide a specific name to honor, a specific language to use, agency graphics, or other information to influence your collage.
