One in Three© Campaign

Q & A

What is One in Three© ?

One in Three© is an awareness campaign on violence against women. It is also a wristband. The 2003 UNIFEM report “Not A Minute More: Ending Violence Against Women” emphasizes that one in three women around the world will be raped, beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime. They found that countries are not doing enough to Stop the Violence.

The One in Three© wristband was designed by Moxie Company to launch the campaign and to raise awareness of a devastating problem faced by women around the world. The wristband is a tool to educate and inspire action in order to eradicate violence in our communities. It communicates an astounding statistic. As you know purple is the recognized color of anti-domestic and sexual violence.

Who are the One in Three© creators?

Moxie Co. is a social enterprise business founded by two women who are long time activists and who have demonstrated a strong professional commitment over three decades of working against gender-based violence. Our passion and commitment to end violence against women inspired us to create the One in Three© campaign.

We are a woman and 50 % woman of color owned company. We are not vendors. We are your One in Three© distributor. To view our bios and learn more about One in Three© please visit us at: http://www.oneinthreewomen.com

What is a social enterprise business? Is it the same as a non-profit?

Moxie Co. supports programs and organizations working to end violence against women. As a social enterprise Moxie Co. has donated wristbands to domestic violence and sexual assault agencies. Non-profit organizations such as Chaya, Consejo, Refugee Women's Alliance, and Chinese Information Service Center (Seattle, WA) have then used the wristbands to collect donations. Agencies that have made wristband purchases, such as Charlotte House in rural WA, the Tohono O’odham Domestic Violence Coalition in AZ, and the Women’s Council for Domestic & Family Services in Perth, Australia are educating their communities and collecting wristband donations to support their work. The Faith Trust Institute, an inter-religious agency working nationally and internationally uses the wristbands as a training tool and trainee gift. Seattle Police Department gives Victim Support Team volunteers wristbands as an appreciation gift.

A social enterprise is not the same as a non-profit. The One in Three© campaign has a social purpose and the wristbands promote that purpose and generate surplus. Surpluses are funds for programs as well as operations, and in 2005 Moxie Co. donated one-third of its surpluses. Women working on behalf of the campaign are Moxie Co. employees. We are proud that the campaign wristband raises awareness of a significant global problem, and promotes global solidarity to end to violence against women.

Why shouldn’t we just do our own wristband?

Set-up costs, design, packaging, and minimum orders are cost prohibitive for most organizations. Also, finding a reputable procurer and factory can be challenging and time consuming.

Why should you support the One in Three© wristband? It is as a tool universally designed to benefit all programs, organizations and communities. Its universal message connects us on a global scale, beyond our own local, state and national boundaries; recognizing women of color, women facing extreme scarcity, women in areas of war, and women exploited through trafficking and colonization. It shows solidarity with women everywhere.

How can we support the One in Three© campaign and promote our individual programs at the same time?

The One in Three© wristband is effective in promoting your programs and events. We invite programs to add their own label to the wristband packaging. It has been used successfully in conjunction with a wide variety of events, such as Fun Runs; it can be given to participants at trainings and conferences and to donors as a “thank you” gift. The One in Three© wristband will raise funds for your programs and build your donor base. It can be advertised on websites and in newsletters.

Why should we support the One in Three© campaign?

The One in Three© campaign is working to get information and awareness about the significant problem of violence against women to people and communities around the world. One in Three© is a simple, yet powerful message. The campaign is supporting the work of individual domestic and sexual violence programs and helping programs raise funds to continue the work that is needed to end violence against women.

We believe a national/inter-national campaign will unite us in our work against violence against women, brand a statistic that gives a true sense of the severity of the problem, and help us to stand in solidarity with communities of color by using our experience, knowledge and privilege as American women to support other women and their families outside of the United States. We believe the campaign is one way to respond to global misogyny resulting in the enslavement, torture and murder of women daily. The One in Three© campaign is increasing our ability to network with women around the world and highlights the critical problem of gender violence.

We believe the prevalence of the problem warrants a broad based response: The One in Three© campaign. We hope you will join our campaign. Your involvement can make a difference.

Help spread the message and fundraise at the same time.

Wear this. Take a stand against violence against women. Speak out.
